EU Drinking Water Directive: What Laboratories Need to Know About PFAS Limits
APRIL 2, 2026
New PFAS Limits Under the EU DWD
The revised European Drinking Water Directive (EU 2020/2184) introduces two parametric values for PFAS in drinking water:
- Sum of 20 individual PFAS: 0.10 µg/L (100 ng/L)
- PFAS Total: 0.50 µg/L (500 ng/L)
These limits represent a significant step change for many laboratories that have been working with higher reporting limits.
Analytical Challenges
Method Sensitivity
Achieving reliable quantification at the individual compound level of 5 ng/L or lower requires:
- Optimised extraction and concentration procedures
- High-performance LC-MS/MS with adequate sensitivity
- Rigorous blank control and QA/QC
Compound Coverage
The directive specifies 20 individual compounds. Laboratories must ensure their calibration standards and methods cover all specified analytes.
PFAS Total
The 'PFAS Total' parameter presents unique analytical challenges, as it requires either comprehensive targeted analysis or the use of surrogate parameters like the Total Oxidisable Precursor (TOP) assay.
Preparing Your Laboratory
- Audit your current method against the 20 specified compounds
- Evaluate your LOQs — can you reliably report at 1/5th of the limit?
- Review your QA/QC framework for compliance with EN/ISO standards
- Update your reporting templates to match directive requirements
- Plan for proficiency testing with accredited PT providers
Timeline
Member states must transpose the directive by January 2023, with compliance monitoring beginning in stages through 2026.
